On Sunday it's officially Spring!!
I LOVE Spring. I mean, I love Winter because I can snowshoe for hours on end and never get bitten by a bug, and tracking any animal activity in the woods is 10,000 times easier when there's fresh powder, but Spring is just so... open. Spring has been bubbling slowly to the surface here in our fair Isle for the last few weeks. There have been pairs of birds chasing each other in flirtatious dances, sunrises that tear you out of bed with their vastness and vibrant colours, and hours of extra sunlight in the evenings.
There's a place down at the brook behind my house where a natural spring quietly expels tiny spouts of cold, fresh water from deep beneath the surface. It is so tiny that in the Winter it freezes over and you can't tell it from any other part of the untouched forest it dwells in. In the Summer the woods near the spring are so infested with mosquitoes that it's virtually untouchable. It is absolutely perfect in the Spring, though.
In the Spring, you can feel the earth heave the weight of the frost from it's shoulders and breathe a sigh of relief. You can watch new life grow and old life be rejuvenated. The air is different, the biting cold and crisp purity of Winter air is replaced with a warmer and more dense smell of movement and growth.
We will likely get more snow before Summer arrives as we always do, but the air will not return to it's February crispness. There is far too much movement below the surface for everything to return to its hibernating state, so we might as well break out our lighter jackets and feel the sun on our faces.
Get outside today, your body will thank you for it and the earth will give you things you didn't know it could offer. Stand silent in the middle of a field, in the middle of the forest, or in the middle of a park. Look up at the sky and down at the ground, there are things happening here.
I'm an outdoors loving, animal obsessed, nuggets of happiness driven 27 year old woman. Here are my thoughts on the beauty I've encountered. Enjoy!
